‘Golden Girl’ Rue McClanahan dies

June 3, 2010

People are dying faster than they can be born and it would seem very few are getting to their 60’s or 70’s majority are leaving before even 50, sorry to post these morbid updates, but as you know we have to post up some news in the entertainment world…sadly majority of it is accidents, death, cheating and lawsuits.

NEW YORK – Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress who brought the sexually liberated Southern belle Blanche Devereaux to life on the hit TV series “The Golden Girls,” has died. She was 76.

Her manager Barbara Lawrence said McClanahan died Thursday at 1 a.m. of a stroke.

She had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and later lectured to cancer support groups on “aging gracefully.” In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery.

McClanahan had an active career in off-Broadway and regional stages in the 1960s before she was tapped for TV in the 1970s for the key best-friend character on the hit series “Maude,” starring Beatrice Arthur. After that series ended in 1978, McClanahan landed the role as Aunt Fran on “Mama’s Family” in 1983.

But her most loved role came in 1985 when she co-starred with Beatrice Arthur, Betty White and Estelle Getty in “The Golden Girls,” a runaway hit that broke the sitcom mold by focusing on the foibles of four aging — and frequently eccentric — women living together in Miami.

She was a funny lady and her charater on the Golden Girls was a wild one, but raw and uncut
she did’nt care what you thought of her, she did her own thing and owned the show imo, she will be missed now unfortunately all the Golden Girls have passed away except Betty White which ironically she is the oldest.

R-I-P

Golden Girls was on everyday in Australia many years ago and it was so freaking funny! The opening theme song was crazy catchy….’thank you for being a friend…’ Yep, even talented celebs age and die, nobody is immune from time – reminds us to cut the crap and just go for what we want – E x

I used to watch/had to watch whatever my grandma watched and remember Rue McClanahan on Mamas Family, but I really remember her more from watching Golden Girls with my grandma. I never completely got what Blanche was referring to b/c I was too young. Now I watch reruns and laugh my butt off at her sassy character. I guess it’s all down to Betty White ( I didn’t even know she was the oldest) and interestingly enough she’s all the rage now, but she always was a great actress to me waaayy before Facebook). We all know that Rue McClanahan will be dearly missed.

It’s been a sad year for the cast of Golden Girls. I hope Betty White will stay with us for a while longer. She’s so funny and good on SNL a few weeks ago.
