see what Yahoo news said about Lena Horne NEW YORK – Lena Horne, was born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.[1] Reported to be descended from the John C. Calhoun family, both sides of her family were a mixture of African, European, and Native American descent.

The enchanting jazz singer and actress who reviled the bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences but not socialize with them, slowing her rise to Broadway superstardom, died Sunday. She was 92.

Horne died at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, according to hospital spokeswoman Gloria Chin. Chin would not release any other details. Read more about Lena’s life in the New York Times obituary here.

Horne, whose striking beauty and magnetic sex appeal often overshadowed her sultry voice, was remarkably candid about the underlying reason for her success.

“I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept,” she once said. “I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked.”

Her father, her son and her husband, Hayton, all died in 1970-71, and the grief-stricken singer secluded herself, refusing to perform or even see anyone but her closest friends. One of them, comedian Alan King, took months persuading her to return to the stage, with results that surprised…for more click here

This is really sad news I admired her and oddly enough just the other night was googling her and was about to post a post in regards her amazing life, now she has passed away. Truly a talented, classy lady with lots of swagg & style. She commanded respected which she received abundantly. With 34 albums and 22 films under her belt plus countless awards, tv guest appearences she was truly a legend. For more on Lena Horne click Lena Horne info also view the Lena Horne – IMDb

Thank you for your reply Jaune, its always a pleasure seeing you here on our blog
I have heard a few of her songs, unfortunately i’m not much of a jazz fan however I know of Lena Horne’s acting career. When it comes to singers that sing with their voices and not their bodies like Vicki Winans, Gloria Gaynor, Amy Ward, Anita Baker just to name a few.

Hey I didn’t know about her because I’m not a jazz expert but I’ll be looking for one of her 22 albums because I liked the way you summarized her life. She does look good and classy. I enjoy reading about real artists as you already know…

Yeah Swagga she was one of the great ones has left us especially when I was about to do a article on her, looks like I got to do one after all. Even more sadly i’ve just realized that she may have been the last one left from her era, but she lived to almost a hundred which is something very few can achieve…see there she still breaks records, without even trying.
